What is pigmentation disorder treatment, and is it right for me?
Pigmentation disorders include café-au-lait spots, freckles, sun spots, melasma and body pigmentation. The right laser starts with the right diagnosis
Pigmentation disorders are conditions in which skin colour is uneven. This page focuses on brown, hyperpigmented marks. Some appear at birth or in early childhood, such as café-au-lait spots; others, like freckles and sun spots, are linked to sun exposure; and some, like melasma, are influenced by hormones.
Café-au-lait spots are flat, light-brown patches, often present from birth. They are usually harmless, but having several can occasionally be linked to a genetic condition, so a doctor should assess them, particularly in children.
Sun spots, also called solar lentigines or age spots, are flat brown spots on sun-exposed skin such as the face and hands. Freckles are small brown spots that tend to darken in summer. Both are common and harmless, but any spot that changes in size, shape or colour should be checked.

Matching the laser
Café-au-lait spots are treated in Hollywood Q mode. Freckles and blemishes are treated with laser toning combinations of Hollywood Spectra, GV Laser, Clarity II and PicoPlus. Body areas use Hollywood Spectra and Clarity II with GA peel care.

A café-au-lait session takes about 5–15 minutes and laser toning about 15–40 minutes. Most patients describe the sensation as mild.

Safety, risks and aftercare
Pigment lasers are generally well tolerated, but they are medical procedures. Your dermatologist will explain the expected benefits, risks and alternatives for each mark.
- Slight redness after treatment is common and usually short-lived.
- Café-au-lait spots are refractory: they need long-term treatment, may not fade completely and can recur.
- As with any pigment laser, changes in skin colour, including darker or lighter patches, are possible. Tell us promptly about any change.
- New or multiple café-au-lait spots, especially in children, should be assessed by a doctor.
- A spot that changes in size, shape or colour is examined before any cosmetic treatment.
- Freckles and sun spots can return with sun exposure, so daily sunscreen is essential.
